Opening the Inn to new eras
Established in 1776, The Griswold Inn is one of the oldest continuously operated inns in the United States, with a history as rich as our country’s.
“We have been occupied by the British. We’ve survived recessions, depressions, Prohibition, and even previous pandemics,” says Co-Innkeeper Geoffrey Paul. “But this is our greatest challenge.”
The COVID-19 pandemic tested The Griswold’s Inn unlike anything that came before. But through the ingenuity and tenacity of its staff, and a Paycheck Protection Program loan, the Inn has survived…and is ready to welcome new eras of guests.
“We will emerge stronger and better. And our customers will come home.”
- Geoffrey Paul, Co-Innkeeper
Despite being unable to host overnight guests and restaurant diners during the pandemic, the Inn kept operations going by creating “Gris To Go,” a takeout service that provided jobs for some employees and allowed its neighbors to keep enjoying their favorite dishes. And they were able to secure a Paycheck Protection Program loan with the assistance of Webster.
“We will survive,” says Geoffrey. “But we’ll survive because of our customers, our community, our staff, and our bank. The Griswold Inn is a place that has celebrated life’s passages for 244 years. That will never change.”
